Head of Horticulture / Voditelj hortikulture (m/f) - Punta Skala

The Head of Horticulture is responsible for the overall design, planning, management, and continuous enhancement of all landscaped areas, gardens, green zones, and exterior aesthetics of the Falkensteiner Punta Skala Resort. This leadership role requires not only hands-on expertise in horticulture but also the strategic vision to ensure that the resort’s outdoor areas reflect the standards of a luxury 5-star property. The position demands a seasoned professional with strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills who can balance operational excellence with sustainability and innovation.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Strategic & Aesthetic Oversight

  • Develop and implement a long-term landscaping and horticultural strategy aligned with the resort’s standards and guest experience goals.
  • Ensure that all outdoor areas reflect the image of a luxury Mediterranean resort, with a strong focus on aesthetics, biodiversity, and sustainability.
  • Oversee seasonal landscape planning, including planting, pruning, irrigation, and pest control programs.

Operational Management

  • Manage daily operations of the horticulture team, including task allocation, quality control, and training.
  • Supervise maintenance of lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs, and decorative plants to the highest standards.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of horticultural equipment and irrigation systems.
  • Organize, plan, and supervise the work of the horticultural team and outdoor cleaning staff, ensuring the highest standards of maintenance across all landscaped and green areas.
  • Plan and monitor requirements for planting material, potted plants, cut flowers, tools, gardening equipment, pesticides, and fertilizers.
  • Coordinate purchasing of plants, decorative pots, vases, and floral arrangements in close collaboration with the Procurement Department.
  • Oversee the health and condition of all plantings and potted plants, identifying plant diseases and pests in a timely manner, and implementing control measures where needed.
  • Responsible for waste management and tidiness of all public landscaped areas within the resort

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, motivate, and train a team of gardeners, landscapers, and seasonal staff.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.

Sustainability & Innovation

  • Introduce sustainable horticultural practices (water management, composting, eco-friendly pest control).
  • Explore innovative landscaping concepts and trends in luxury resorts.
  • Support the resort’s ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) commitments and green initiatives.
  • Cooperate with external landscape architects and designers to implement new landscaping projects and seasonal replanting programs.
  • Develop and maintain sustainable horticultural practices, including eco-friendly plant care and efficient water usage.

Guest & Brand Experience

  • Ensure the cleanliness, upkeep, and maintenance of all public areas, including pedestrian pathways, roads, landscaped zones, and greenery.
  • Develop and implement a structured gardening plan that preserves the tranquillity of the resort environment, with particular care to avoid noise disturbance for guests and ensuring all noisy tasks begin after 9:00 AM.
  • Supervise the florist’s work to ensure timely, high-quality floral arrangements for the lobby, guest rooms (upon request), restaurants, and bar centrepieces.

Budget & Administration

  • Develop and manage annual horticulture budget (labor, equipment, plants, suppliers).
  • Source and manage vendor relationships for specialized services and materials.
  • Provide regular reports on departmental performance, achievements, and improvements.

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:


  • Education & Experience
    • Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field.
    • Minimum 7–10 years of professional horticultural experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role, preferably in luxury hotels, resorts, or large estates.
    • Proven track record in managing large-scale horticulture projects and teams.

  • Skills & Competencies
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and planning skills.
    • Expertise in Mediterranean flora, sustainable landscaping, and irrigation systems.
    • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • Ability to balance hands-on work with strategic oversight.
    • Strong communication skills (English required; German or Croatian an advantage).
    • High level of professional integrity, maturity, and commitment to excellence.
