EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency, operating satellites that monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful.

We are currently looking for an experienced Ground Segment Systems Engineering Team Leader to join our international team of inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector.

This role is rooted in EUMETSAT’s mission and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society!

BACKGROUND

Within the Satellite Systems Ground Segment Division (SGS), the Ground Segment System Engineering Team Leader will manage a team of highly qualified system engineers and system engineering activities related to the development, maintenance and evolution of the ground segments of EUMETSAT mandatory missions such as MTG, one of the most complex and innovative meteorological geostationary satellite systems ever built, providing near-real-time 3D snapshots of important characteristics of the atmosphere.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of a team ensuring the implementation of organisational objectives by motivated team members. She or he will coordinate and delegate activities in the assigned areas, monitor the day-to-day activities, and propose long-term strategic plans in the entrusted areas of responsibility. As a reporting officer and coach to team members, she or he will contribute to the further development and career planning of the team members.

DUTIES
• Manage a multidisciplinary ground segment system engineering team and its activities, including management of resources and priorities, training and personal development of team members;
• Support the transition into operations of new EUMETSAT ground segments and manage the associated systems engineering activities;
• Provide systems engineering support to the maintenance of the EUMETSAT operational ground segments and, in particular lead the system engineering of upgrades responding to evolving operational user’s needs whilst promoting system awareness, coherence and consistency across ground segments;
• Define, coordinate and implement the system-level IV&V testing approach for major evolutions;
• Maintain the overall system architecture and interface coherence for EUMETSAT operational ground systems. This includes the maintenance of a complete and consistent set of system level documentation, like requirements documents, requests for Waiver/Deviations, interface control documents (ICDs), architectural models, technical budgets, IV&V plans etc.;
• Coordinate the procurement of industrial support and service firms and manage the contractors during the execution of the activities;
• Provide reporting and management support to the Ground Segment System Engineering Competence Area manager.

Znanja i kvalifikacije:
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Solid experience in the engineering and maintenance of operational systems, and with direct experience in IV&V for systems operated in a 24/7 environment;
• Proven experience in leading, coordinating and developing system engineering teams during the operational phase. Experience in ground systems under development is considered an asset;
• Proficiency and experience in the definition and implementation of engineering processes for sustaining, maintaining and evolving operational systems, especially using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE);
• Knowledge of standards relevant for system engineering and formal methods for system specification (e.g. ECSS) as well as experience in the use of related products/tools;
• Strong interpersonal, leadership and communications skills, and preferably experience operating within a matrix environment.

QUALIFICATIONS
• University degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline
